GEODUCK

What is this?

It is a very large species of saltwater clam it belong to hiatellidae family. About 109 million mature geoducks are crammed into Puget Sound's sediments. It is¬ the prime cluster of naval animals in the Sound.

  • Prevalent genus of Ponapean.
  • The Chinese call them as “elephant trunk clam”.
  • It is a broadcast spanner.
  • Cordial digging calm.


DESCRIPTION

The neck of a geoduck can stretch to 1 meter, from the body and shell of this clam. When the clam is harvested by high pressure, the neck contracts. The oldest calm age is 168.The maximum weight ranges from 7.15 kgs,it will grow one inch per year and after that growth is reduced drastically. Within 5-6 years the size will be 2.2 pounds. They are always found at 10-80 feet below the low tidal waves, it is not having teeth and the valves of the shell are always open.

TYPICAL AGE

The adults may live up to 140 years where the shell length will be 23cm at the age of 140.Many individuals have lived more than 100 years. They have good growth at the age of 10 to 15 itself .After the growth reduction the body weight increases slowly


DIET

They always feed on marine algae, mostly diatoms and flagellates

EAT AS FOOD!!!!!!!!!!

The neck can be cut or argument and used in chowders. The body has been sliced, pounded. Although they are safe to eat, they are not widely used in the marketed due to their reserve. They are exposed only for few hours in a month. It cannot be kept for a long time.
